Wood Brothers Head to Kansas for the Price Chopper 400

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Kansas Speedway this weekend for the “Price Chopper 400” and the #21 Motorcraft Ford Fusion is already on its way.  The Kansas-Missouri region has enjoyed a rich history of racing. In fact Glen Wood raced in the area during the 1950’s (see the most recent Wood Brothers “Classic Memories” at for a re-cap of a race in Kansas in which Glen Wood finished 2nd). Adding to this tradition, the Kansas Speedway was built and completed in early 2001. It will be the ninth time Sprint Cup teams have raced at the 1.5 mile tri-oval.

The Wood Brothers have competed in each of the 8 previous Kansas Speedway races and have earned one top 5 and three top 10s. Bill Elliott has 5 starts at Kansas Speedway – twice finishing in the top 5. The team will look to continue building on its intermediate track program – a program that has produced 4 top ten qualifying efforts and 4 top 20 finishes in its last six intermediate track races.

Track action begins Friday with practice and qualifying. Two practices are scheduled for Saturday. Live race coverage starts at 1:00 pm EST on ABC.

Gilliland and Hyder Work to a 19th Place Finish at Atlanta

Given the unique weekend schedule, Crew Chief David Hyder and driver David Gilliland had only one day to figure out how they could make the #21 Motorcraft Ford Fusion as competitive as possible. After a couple of practices and a 17th place qualifying effort on Saturday, the duo appeared to be off to a good start.

On Sunday, Gilliland took the green flag for the first Atlanta night race and the #21 quickly raced into the top 10. As the race wore on, the car became loose – a condition the team fought the entire night. Crew Chief Hyder worked hard to correct the loose condition and eventually found answers – at times giving Gilliland a car that was the fastest on the track. Gilliland navigated the #21 through a long race with 9 cautions. The team’s persistence paid off, resulting in a 19th place finish.

Co-owner Eddie Wood stated, “Hyder and David (Gilliland) did a heck of a job tonight. I can’t thank them both enough. They were put in a tough spot. Getting these cars to perform well with a crew chief and driver who have worked together is hard enough. To do it with guys that have never worked together is near impossible. But they kept at it and put together a heck of a performance.”

The team’s next race is October 4, 2009 at Kansas where Bill Elliott is expected to be back behind the wheel.

Gilliland Qualifies #21 Motorcraft 17th at Atlanta

David Gilland and the #21 team worked hard all day and their efforts paid-off.  Picking up almost 1/2 a second from their fastest practice time, Gilland  qualified the #21 Motorcraft Ford Fusion 17th running a lap time of 30.554 seconds.

Martin Truex earned the pole with a lap time of 30.106 seconds.  Live race coverage begins at 7:00 pm tomorrow on ESPN

Gilliland to Drive #21 at Atlanta

David Gilliland will be taking over the driving duties of the #21 Motorcraft Ford Fusion this weekend for the Pep Boys Auto 500, filling in for Bill Elliott. Elliott is experiencing some back problems and uncertain how he will feel driving the car.

Co-owner Eddie Wood stated, “Given the modified practice schedule where the practices and qualifying are all being done on Saturday, we didn’t feel there was enough time to make changes to the seat if Bill wasn’t comfortable and we needed to get another driver. We called David to see if he was available. Thankfully he was and agreed to help.”

In his fourth year in the Sprint Cup Series, Gilliland has raced in 22 of the 24 Cup races this season. Gilliland has 6 starts at Atlanta Motor Speedway with his best finish (15th) coming in 2006.

It’s Back to Night Racing – the First for Atlanta Motor Speedway

The inaugural night race at Atlanta Motor Speedway is scheduled for this Sunday at 7:30 pm and the Wood Brothers and Bill Elliott are excited about it. After strong performances in each of the last five races, the team is headed back to the track and looking to continue their positive trend.

Atlanta Motor Speedway is known for being the fastest track on the Sprint Cup circuit with average lap speeds over 190 miles per hour. It is a 1.54 mile quad-oval with 24 degrees of banking in the corners. This weekend’s race marks the 101st Atlanta Sprint Cup race and its first night race.

The Wood Brothers will be making their 99th Atlanta appearance. The Wood Brothers have enjoyed much success at the track winning 12 times, earning thirty three top 5’s, forty five top 10s and 9 poles.

Like the Wood Brothers, past series champion Bill Elliott is looking forward to racing at what is considered his home track. The Dawsonville, Georgia native will be making his 61st start at Atlanta having earned 5 wins, thirteen top 5’s, nineteen top 10’s and five poles.

The teams take to the track on Saturday for two practices and qualifying and race on Sunday. Live race coverage begins Sunday at 7:00 pm on ESPN.

Team Effort Gets #21 Quick Lane Ford Fusion 16th at MIS

It was a weekend of perseverance for the Wood Brothers at Michigan International Speedway. From a hard earned 9th place qualifying effort on Friday to a “never-quit” attitude during the race, driver Bill Elliott, crew chief David Hyder and the team brought the #21 Quick Lane Ford Fusion to the checkered flag in 16th place.

The #21 took the green flag before a crowd of over 100,000 people under hot, humid conditions. Bill fought a loose condition until the midpoint of the race. Elliott and Hyder continued working to help the car’s handling and after a brief rain delay and a couple of pit stops, the duo began dialing the car in. Coming from as far back as 35th, Bill drove the #21 up through the field and eventually crossed the finish line in 16th place.

Team co-owner Eddie Wood commented, “All in all, we had a lot of positives today. We struggled a bit early, but the guys figured it out and got very competitive at the end. We had good pit stops and good race strategy. Racing in Michigan is always special to us because it’s the home track for our sponsors Motorcraft and Ford Motor Company.”

Elliott Qualifies the #21 Quick Lane Ford Fusion 9th at MIS

Bill Elliott and the #21 team picked-up almost three tenths of a second during its qualifying effort running a lap time of 38.750 seconds. Bill’s lap was good enough to earn him a 9th place starting position for Sunday’s Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

Brian Vickers won he pole with a lap time of 38.453 seconds.

#21 Team Sporting New Colors & Sponsor at MIS – Quick Lane

The Wood Brothers #21 Ford Fusion will be sporting a new sponsor and new colors this weekend for the Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) – trading the red Motorcraft for the blue, white and orange colors of Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center.  Quick Lane is a nationwide network of facilities that provides auotmotive service while you wait – to learn more, go to .

While the Quick Lane logos and paint scheme may be new to the #21 this week, the team hopes the car’s steady performance continues.  Coming off strong qualifying efforts in the last four races (Charlotte, June Michigan, Chicago and Indy) and solid finishes at Charlotte and Michigan, the team is planning on a complete weekend – one where attention to detail at the shop and a strong qualifying effort result in a good finish on Sunday.

Both Bill Elliott and the Wood Brothers look forward to racing at MIS – not only becuase it is near the home of the team’s biggest supporters, Ford Motor Company and Motorcraft, but because Elliott and the Wood Brothers have enjoyed much success at the track.  The Wood Brothers have competed in each of the 79 NASCAR Cup races held at MIS compiling 11 wins, 26 top fives, 37 top tens and 9 poles.  Elliott has had 58 MIS starts accumulating 7 wins, 17 top fives, 29 top ten and 7 poles.  During the June race, Elliott and the Wood Brothers qualified 15th and finished 16th.

Be sure to catch all the action this weekend beginning Friday with practice and qualifying followed by a 2nd practice and Happy Hour on Saturday.  The Carfax 400 is scheduled to begin on Sunday at 2:00 pm EST with live race coverage beginning at 1:30 pm EST on ESPN.
