Bayne and his Wood Brothers’ Ford Fusion were never far from the lead for much of the race. He kept the car in or around the top 10 in spite of a collision with the No. 51 of Kurt Busch on Lap 91.
He was running 12th with 10 laps to go and just two laps later, was swept up in a multi-car crash that destroyed his race car and ended his night.
Team co-owner Eddie Wood said that despite seeing his car towed back to the garage, he was proud of his team’s performance.
“We ran well all night, but we got caught up in a crash,” he said. “We were able to recover from an earlier incident and still had a shot at a top-10 finish or better, but we didn’t quite get there to do it.”
Wood promised that when the Sprint Cup circuit runs its final restrictor-plate race of the season at Talladega Superspeedway in October, the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team will have a car as fast as the one that was wiped out at Daytona.
“We’ll build a new car and go to Talladega,” he said.
But the team’s immediate focus is on its next race, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 29.
