‘50 Years of Firsts’ History Display To Open Coca-Cola 600 Month of May

CONCORD, N.C. (March 6, 2009) – An interactive 50 Years of Firsts display will open with an appearance by Kasey Kahne to kick off the Coca-Cola 600 Month of May as part of Lowe’s Motor Speedway’s 50th year celebration.

Kahne, the 2008 Sprint All-Star Race and Coca-Cola 600 defending champion, will join speedway officials at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 4, to open the 17,424 square foot display located near the speedway’s main entrance at Highway 29 and Bruton Smith Boulevard. The exhibit will be open daily through Sunday, May 24, in conjunction with the Lowe’s Motor Speedway ticket office operating hours and admission will be free of charge.

The display will feature a variety of artifacts, memorabilia and race cars from five decades of NASCAR stock car racing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, including Bobby Allison’s 1969 No. 12 Mercury that he drove to Victory Lane in the 1971 World 600 and David Pearson’s 1971 No. 21 Mercury that he won the 1973 National 500 pole award in, setting off an 11-race pole award streak at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Fans will also be able to view the 1959 Charlotte Motor Speedway articles of incorporation signed by Bruton Smith and Curtis Turner; the trophy Joe Lee Johnson received for winning the first World 600 in 1960; artifacts from many drivers including Janet Guthrie and Alan Kulwicki; plus a video chronicling the 50-year evolution of NASCAR’s most innovative speedway.

“For our 50th year, we’re inviting every race fan to relive the good times that got us here and make new memories to last a lifetime at the Sprint All-Star Race and Coca-Cola 600,” said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

“The 50 Years of Firsts history display is our way to honor our fans by giving them the chance to stroll down memory lane and see things most have never seen before. This will be an exceptional added attraction for fans coming to Charlotte in May.”

The display will also include video vignettes of the 32 greatest moments in racing history at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, a victory lane backdrop for fan photos and an autograph area for fans to meet NASCAR drivers and personalities during race weeks.

Lowe’s Motor Speedway officials are working with the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Memory Lane Museum in Mooresville, N.C., and many of the NASCAR Sprint Cup teams to obtain additional items for the exhibit.
