Bill Elliott Qualified Fifth for the Sharpie 500 in Bristol
Bristol, TN (August 22, 2008)-Bill Elliott made a stellar qualifying lap in the Wood Brothers no. 21 Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center Ford Fusion that put the team fifth on the starting grid for the Sharpie 500 Saturday night, August 23rd.
The team had a less than desirable practice session on Friday afternoon that left them with a 36th place practice time. Crew Chief David Hyder made some adjustments to help with the issues at hand, but Elliott was still not sure what the outcome would be for qualifying.
Yet, after he ran a lap of 120.740mph and 15.892 seconds during qualifying and was the fastest of the driver’s who had to qualify on time, Bill was excited with the surprising result. He said, “I was tickled to death regardless of what happens to this point. We made a few changes and, honestly, it didn’t feel that much quicker but you can be a tenth one way or the other here. I had to feather it a little bit off of four because I got just a little hung out, but it was a good, solid lap. I thought, ‘Maybe that’ll be OK,’ but we’ll see.”
The 21 team will have a final practice session on Friday evening and will focus on the race set up in order be ready for Saturday’s 500 lap event.
